Lone Pine Publishing has just released a new Birds of Ohio by James McCormac and Gregory Kennedy. This book is good reference guide for the backyard and casual birder. If you want a guide specific to Ohio, you should give it a try.

295 species of birds that are considered regularly occurring species are covered in-depth. Interesting traits of character, life histories, and best sites to watch, habitat requirements and feeding behaviors are described. A map of the state, marked with the seasonal range, along with a gauge of abundance for each month of the year, is included for each bird.

An additional 117 species that are considered accidental or casual (not seen on a yearly basis) have been recorded in Ohio. Of these, 51 of the species that appear more regularly are briefly discussed in an illustrated appendix. The remaining 66 species are included in the checklist at the back of the book. Ohio’s total bird list currently has 412 species, surpassing all surrounding states except Michigan (at 419 species).

The book also explains birding techniques and equipment, and lists contact information for all of the major birding organizations in the state. The top 20 Ohio birding sites are described and the top 100 are listed.
